“ The John Muir Award is an environmental Award Scheme focused on wild places.

It encourages awareness and responsibility for the
natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.”

The John Muir Award is the main educational initiative of the John
Muir Trust.

The ACE Programme incorporating the John Muir award:

-

10 single day activities over the academic year.
These consist of 7 adventure activity days which
include undertaking:
Team building, Adventure walk,
Abseiling, Bushcraft,
Gorge walking, Coasteering,
Open canoeing

-

3 conservation/environmental days

-
A project will be developed that meets the needs of
your school.
Great benefits for the young people:

-

Environmental awareness - They will discover and explore many different environments, beaches, forests, hill sides and gorges.

  -

Teambuilding - Start to learn about working as a team and the different ways we communicate

  -

Raised confidence and self esteem - The young people will face new challenges and have positive experiences which will help to boost confidence and self esteem

What the schools who have taken part have to say?

ACE’s Environmental Discovery Programme compliments the philosophy of “A Curriculum for Excellence”.

It creates enjoyable experiences through which pupils learn about the natural environment and the importance of protecting it for the enjoyment of future generations.

As it covers environmental awareness and conservation issues it enables the pupils and staff at Barr Primary School to take part in the John Muir Award Scheme.

  Where does it fit?

-

South Ayrshire Council's Junior Achievement Award (JAA):

This is a balanced programme of activities for young people in transition from Primary into Secondary school. A key component of the JAA is the Environmental Discovery section and this is where the link with activities undertaken, and the John Muir Award, is most readily identified.

Both want young people to be responsible, aware, and enjoy their natural environment and I would urge schools to consider supporting their pupils to participate.
